Friday Night Sew-In A Success! February 20, 2010

I had been very excited about the Friday Night Sew-In (any excuse, right?) but I almost didn’t make it!  My husband was playing a benefit for Haiti tonight, which left me free to spend the entire night in front of my machine without guilt.  I tucked the kids in bed, put on my favorite pjs, and started laying out the supplies.  And then the baby was crying.  Fresh diaper and I’m back to sewing.  Then the baby woke up again.  Grrrr…. doesn’t he know mommy wants to sew?  So we end up watching television until he falls asleep.  I repeated this process a total of four times.  But somehow I actually managed to get a bit done.  The two holiday wall hangings I started from scratch and now they just need to be quilted.  The flower wall hanging was already pieced but I finished most of the needle turn applique.  I can’t believe how much I actually got accomplished.  And now I have two more projects crossed off my list and can buy more guilt free!

Turn it out Tuesday February 16, 2010

I can’t believe how much energy I had today.  It must have been the oreos I had for breakfast.  You know, it IS the breakfast of champions.  First I pieced this:

With any luck, I may have it quilted by next Valentine’s Day.

Then I finished the binding on this:

Please excuse the blurriness of the photos.  I’ve temporarily replaced my good camera with a cheap one until I can afford to have mine repaired.  And, of course, I plan on blaming said cheap camera for my lack of skill when it comes to taking pictures.

I also finished all the blocks for a quilt using the Moda Odyssea line and now I just need to sew them together and finish it off with a couple of borders.  Oh, and I did finally get around to taking a picture of this quilt I made using the Riley Blake Wheels line:

I am currently mourning the semi-death of my camera.  Anyone know a good repair shop that will fix it for something close to free?  I swear this is the only reason that I have failed to post pictures of my newest quilts!  I finished the binding and I am currently washing the boy quilt I made and I also put together the quilt top of a quilt that I am making for…..  ME!!!  Something I am going to keep!  Oh my!  I made it from Moda’s Blush and I am in love!  Now I just need to decide if I am going to quilt it myself or quilt by check.

This is going to be my UFO-free year.  And I am still on track!  Okay, so it is still January, but still….  I completed one quilts for my neighbor who had a little girl on Saturday.  I used the Hushabye line from Moda.  This fabric is so yummy and I am glad that I got some of it before it disappeared from my LQS.

And I finished these two sweet baby quilts from the Baby Love book.  You can purchase the book, fabric, and even see the quilts on display at Material Girls.

Extra points to anyone who noticed my hubby’s pajama pants match one of these quilts!

Alright, I saw a copy of this image on Mid Ohio Quilter’s blog and got just a wee bit excited.  So I immediately headed over to Moda and found the same image.  But, of course, no explanation at all.  Does this mean we will soon be seeing round precuts?  Or am I just imagining the whole thing?

Finished! October 17, 2009

Just pulled this little beauty from the dryer.  I’m very happy with the way it turned out.  Unfortunately, my camera died after the first picture and I don’t have time to head over to the store before the baby shower.

I am overwhelmed by the number of hits I’ve received on my blog over the last 24 hours.  Amazing!  And thank you all who left comments and emailed me.  Sometimes it feels like I’m writing to myself!  LOL  Anyway, I’ve kicked myself into gear and have finished 70% of the quilting.  Just got to finish the rest and then I am off to bed.  I plan to get the binding done when I wake up and then this quilt will be spinning in my washing machine.  Soooo close to being done.  Woot!

Scrap Quilt Tutorial October 15, 2009

100_0951

Monday night I came home from work, checked my email, and found an invitation to a baby shower waiting in my inbox.  Oh good, I get to make a baby quilt!  Oh crap, the shower is THIS Saturday!  Ack!  Not only am I now working full time, I also only have a few days to sew a quilt top and get it quilted.  And there is that pesky problem of being flat broke…

So, after much deliberation, and searching through all of my scraps, I came up with this quilt top.  It isn’t anything special but it was a great use of scraps and I think it turned out fine.  So I’ve decided to share it with you all.  Here goes:

Materials for top:

1 charm pack or 36- 5 inch squares in various coordinating prints

1/3 yd. for inner border

2/3 yd. for outer border

Step One:

Lay out 36 five inch squares six rows with six squares in each row.  Sew rows together with 1/4″ seams.

Step Two:

Press.  Press all seams down on first strip and all seams up on second strip.  Continue alternating pressing on each strip.

Step Three:

Pin strips together and sew with 1/4″ seams.  Press.

Step Four:

Cut border into four 2 1/2″ x 44″ strips.  Sew one strip on each side.  Trim and press.

Step Five:

For outer border, follow same steps as for inner border but make strips 5 inches wide.  Sew, trim, and press.

And now you have your quilt top finished.  I hope that was simple enough.  I made this entire baby quilt using the leftover fabric from the quilt I made for my mom recently (see it here).  I only had to purchase the fabric for the inner border.  I think this would be cuter with an actual charm pack which would give a better variation of light and dark fabrics.  It would probably also help if I quit taking pictures at night because it always makes the colors look a bit funky!  LOL

I will post the finished quilt later this week!  Happy quilting!
